Super Hero Mom MomentsWhen I became a mom in 2007, I had no idea what motherhood really entailed. I had always wanted to be a mom, so I was excited for this new adventure. You can read many books about it and hear advice from other moms, but nothing could truly prepare you for motherhood. I stayed home the first several weeks after my son was born. We adjusted the new routines, sleeping schedules (or lack of sleep) and just enjoyed every second of having a newborn. I had planned on staying home as much as possible during the first 6 weeks after my son was born to slowly adjust into a routine with our new little one. However, after 4 weeks of staying home, I had the most unexpected tragedy happen in my life. My father passed away. I knew at this time, I was going to need extra support from my family and other moms. I remember my best friend being there right away to help me buy my first breast pump, knowing that I might need extra milk during times I had to be away from my baby. I had much help and support with Luke during this difficult time. After the funeral, I knew it was time to get out and about with my baby and I needed to be around other moms. I joined a breastfeeding support group which met once a week and instantly connected with other new moms. It was just what I needed. It was also a good excuse to get dressed and out of the house, even though it took me longer than it used to! We sat in a circle of other moms and their newborns and shared our experiences, challenges and supported one another. Afterwards, a group of my new mom friends, would meet for lunch with our babies. I remember all of us trying to figure out how to discreetly breastfeed at a restaurant. We would always share our stories and the ups and downs of motherhood! I met so many wonderful new friends during this time, and I don’t think I could have navigated through this new motherhood journey without them. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF A SUPER HERO MOM MOMENT? After being a mom for 10 years now, I have seen first hand how incredible mothers truly are! But sometimes, we get burnt out and focus on everything we are doing wrong. We label this as a “Mom Fail”. I have had my share of “mom fail” moments, such as, forgetting lunches, forgetting picture day, being late for pick up, the list goes on. Instead of focusing on all the things we do wrong, we need to focus on all the things we do right (because that list is longer!) I call these “Super Hero Mom Moments”. Whether they are big things or just that you got your kids out the door on time, they are awesome! It’s not easy juggling so many things as a mom. Sports, extra activities, preparing daily meals, work, volunteering and the list goes on and on. Moms are truly busier than ever! No matter how busy moms are, I see how moms always put their families first. Moms are Superheroes! One of my favorite classes that I teach is a cooking class for moms called “Healthy Meals for Multi-Tasking Moms”. This class was designed as a cooking class to help moms put together quick and healthy meals. It has turned into more than that. It’s a time when moms can come together and share their Super Hero Mom Moments and focus on how great they are doing as a mom! Even when they feel that they aren’t doing so well! We can always find something that we did that was super! Together we can navigate motherhood together! It does take a village, and moms can support, lift each other up and be there for one another. It can’t be done alone.
