Staying healthy through the holidays

Picture
It's really hard to believe that another year has flown by and the holidays are here! As much joy and fun as the holidays bring, it can also bring a lot of stress and overeating!  Here are a few ways to stay healthy during the holidays while still enjoying all the festivities.  If you don't want to spend the new year trying to lose holiday pounds, try  some of these simple ways to make it a healthier month!
  1. Drink lots of water.  Staying hydrated will help curb your appetite and prevent mindless snacking.
  2. Watch your intake of alcohol and sweetened drinks. These drinks can contain a lot of extra calories and sugar.
  3. Eat extra veggies! Get extra greens in daily smoothies and make a fresh green salad every day.
  4. Bring a healthy dish to a potluck with a new healthy holiday recipe.
  5. Exercise! Even if you can’t make it to the gym, try a family walk or hike.  Put on some Christmas music and have a dance party with your family for some extra exercise.
  6. Keep your stress down by taking time out for yourself. Take a yoga class or a just try to find some quiet meditation time at home.
  7.  Modify your favorite recipes for a healthier version. Try cutting the butter, cream and cheese!
  8. Enjoy all the goodies of the season in moderation. Be mindful of portion size. If you overindulge, just get back on track the next day with healthy eating and exercise.

With just a few small and simple changes, you CAN have a healthy holiday while still enjoying some favorites dishes and treats of the season!  Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy Holiday!
